In the fable of the Stone Soup, a traveler convinces each resident in a village to add one ingredient to a pot of boiling water in which he’s begun cooking a “magic stone”. Each person contributes what they can – carrots, onions, potatoes, meat scraps, a spice – and the resulting stew feeds the entire village.
